Hands Off Our Hospital!

In response to local concerns about West Cornwall Hospital - the inability of the Trust to recruit Casualty doctors, and particularly the 'deferred reopening' of one of the two medical wards, there will be a march in support of the hospital on . .

SATURDAY DECEMBER 3RD

leaving St Johns Hall Penzance at 11am and walking to West Cornwall Hospital, where everyone will link hands around the hospital in a symbolic gesture of protection and care for it.

The event has been coordinated by 'Hands Off Our Hospital", a collection of individuals and organisations which is non-political and representative of the community.  It includes MP Andrew George, local councillors and mayors, West Cornwall HealthWatch, Health Initiative Cornwall, and is supported by The Cornishman newspaper.

We encourage everyone who cares for West Cornwall Hospital to join us on
December 3rd.  See you there.

"Deferred re-opening" of Medical Ward at West Cornwall Hospital

This is the worst of news, and we take a very dim view of it. We had been categorically promised that the closure of this ward was temporary, whilst the floors were repaired. We were assured that the ward would reopen; now once again a promise has been broken. Over the past months we in West Cornwall HealthWatch have tried to trust the Trust again, and we have supported managers at WestCornwall Hospital in trying to bring new services to Penzance. So this news is a body blow, and we feel that we are back where we started. The plan will not work for Treliske either, compounding the problems of an already challenged Trust and destroying any confidence we might have had in it; and it is most certainly the wrong decision for the people in the west of Cornwall.

We see here the signs that the Trust is heading for corporate failure, and we are appalled. We continue to support the hard-working staff at West Cornwall Hospital, who must be as stunned as we are by the news. We deplore the lack of either vision or understanding demonstrated by the decision-makers in Truro, who once again have chosen to centralise services rather than offer care closer to home. It also reveals a flagrant disregard for any attempt at ‘joined-up thinking’ across the NHS.

We cannot and will not accept this decision and you can be assured that we shall fight it all the way.
